The Cost of Care for the Uninsured: What Do We Spend, Who Pays, and What Would Full Coverage Add to Medical Spending? [.pdf], This issue update finds that uninsured Americans could incur nearly $41 billion in uncompensated health care treatment in 2004, with federal, state and local governments paying as much as 85 percent of the care. It also finds that if the country provided coverage to all the uninsured, the cost of additional medical care provided to the newly insured would be $48 billion. http://www.kff.org/uninsured/loader.cfm?url=/commonspot/security/getfile.cfm&PageID=35965

I pulled this off from the uninsured quiz on the website.

1. Today, 44 million Americans have no health insurance. Ten years ago, 37 million Americans were uninsured.

2. 50% of uninsured Americans have jobs, and 59% of uninsured employees are not offered any health coverage by their companies.

3. Between the ages 18 and 44 years old contains the highest number of uninsured people. 41.5% of the uninsured, or 18,260,000 people, are between the ages of 18 and 44 years old.

4. Men are more likely to be uninsured. Of the uninsured, 53% are men and 47% are women.

5. 12% of all American children under 18 are uninsured. 30.3% of children without coverage are under six years old.
